Police has apprehended two people in Nyarugenge district in connection with counterfeiting and circulating currencies as the force continues crackdown on individuals involved in this illegal act, which has an impact on the economy.
The duo identified as William Ngoga, 20 and Etienne Ndahimana were arrested on April 9 in Kabeza cell of Muhima sector after they were found in possession of Rwf 60, 000 in Rwf5000 and Rwf 2000 denominations, all fake.
They are currently held at Muhima Police Station as investigations to bring to book all those that could be connected to this act continue.
Their illegal business came to light after Police, which went looking for Ndahimana for allegedly conning a woman in Nyabugogo bus terminal of Rwf2, 000, earlier, discovered Rwf30, 000 fake monies in his house.
Another Rwf30, 000 was discovered in Ngoga house, after Ndahimana named him his accomplice. Police also discovered equipment at Ngoga’s house that they allegedly used to make fake currencies. Senior Supt.
Urbain Mwiseneza, the central region Police Spokesperson said currency counterfeit “very few” but warned anyone that could still be involved.
“This is an illegal act punishable under the Rwandan penal code, and which might hurt the business and the country’s economy and we give much emphasis to fight it,” SSP Mwiseneza said.
He also appealed to the business community to always be vigilant and check currency notes they get, thoroughly, to avoid falling prey of the “crooks” and report those who attempt to con them with fake monies.
